SAN DIEGO — Jeffrey T. Mueller, M.D., FASA, assistant professor of anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, Rochester, Minnesota, and a staff anesthesiologist at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Phoenix, was today named president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the nation’s largest organization of anesthesiologists. Dr. Mueller assumed office at the ANESTHESIOLOGY ® 2026 annual meeting and will serve for one year.

I am committed to advancing the Society’s mission, especially securing anesthesiology’s economic future, while ensuring patient safety remains our top priority,” said Dr. Mueller. “It is essential that anesthesiologists have a seat at the table, so in the year ahead, I will continue to advocate for our specialty to preserve anesthesiologist-led care, fight for fair Medicare payments and hold big insurance companies accountable. I’m proud of the outstanding resources we offer our members to help them provide high-quality patient care and flourish in their careers. I look forward to continuing to support them with first-class education, scientific publications, mentoring, coding and billing resources, and much more.”
Dr. Mueller brings extensive leadership experience to his new position, having served ASA in a wide range of capacities. In addition to his current role on ASA’s Executive Committee and Administrative Council, he has held several of the organization’s highest leadership positions, including president-elect, first vice president, vice president for professional affairs, chair of the Division of Administrative Affairs and ASA Board director. He has also served as chair of the Anesthesia Quality Institute’s Board of Directors and chair of the ASAPAC Executive Board. In 2015, Dr. Mueller received the Bertram W. Coffer, M.D., Excellence in Government Award from ASA in recognition of his exemplary contributions to the specialty of anesthesiology.
In addition to his commitments to ASA, Dr. Mueller served as president of the Arizona Society of Anesthesiologists and president of the Arizona Medical Association. He also served on the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association’s Board of Directors and the American Hospital Association’s Committee on Clinical Leadership. In 2023, he received the National Leadership Award from the Arizona Medical Association and the Distinguished Service Award from the Arizona Society of Anesthesiologists.
“Dr. Mueller is a skilled leader and will tackle the challenges facing our specialty head-on, especially, fighting for fair payment,” said ASA Immediate Past President Patrick Giam, M.D., FASA. “His deep knowledge and expertise in healthcare economics are a great asset to the Society and specialty. He recognizes that the future success of our specialty depends on making anesthesia’s quality, safety and efficiency visible, measurable and appropriately recognized by both commercial insurance and governmental payment systems.”
Dr. Mueller received his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tulsa and his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He completed his internship in internal medicine and his residency in anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He is board-certified in anesthesiology.
