The Journal of Systematics and Evolution (JSE) has announced a forthcoming special issue, “Deep Sea Biodiversity,” scheduled for publication in July 2027. This thematic collection aims to unravel the origins, maintenance, and ecological functions of life in the ocean’s most extreme frontiers – from the twilight zone (200 m) to the hadal trenches (>6,000 m) and polar deep seas.

Special issue edited by Dr. Zhongli Sha (Institute of Oceanology, CAS), Dr. Songhai Li (Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS), and Dr. Wenliang Zhou (Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory), the issue invites integrative studies spanning taxonomy, phylogenomics, comparative genomics, and microbial ecology. Priority topics include new species discoveries in understudied taxa (meiofauna, deep-sea fishes, microbial eukaryotes), adaptive evolution in chemosynthetic ecosystems, genomic resources, conservation of genetic resources, and novel bioinformatics tools.

All accepted papers will be free access , with page and color charges waived –a rare opportunity for researchers worldwide. Submissions of research articles, reviews, genome reports, software notes, and database descriptions are welcome.

Deadline: 31 January 2027.

Submit via https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/josae and clearly indicate the special issue in your cover letter. Early online publication will precede the July issue.

For scope queries, contact the Special Issue editors or the JSE Editorial Office (jse@ibcas.ac.cn). Dive in – your discoveries could reshape our understanding of life beneath the waves.
