Dr. Takano received his DDS from Niigata University, Japan, in 1975 and his PhD in Oral Anatomy from the same university in 1979. From 1990-1992, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, working under the mentorship of Drs. Miles Crenshaw and James Bawden. He has been credited for his work on calcium transport in the enamel organ as well as for other studies related to biological mineralization.

The IADR Basic Research in Biological Mineralization Award, supported by Unilever Oral Care and consisting of a cash award and a plaque, is designed to stimulate, encourage, and recognize basic research in the field of biological mineralization. As one of the Distinguished Scientist Awards conferred annually by the IADR, it represents the highest honor the IADR can bestow.
