A study explores the effects of subsidies on hospitals' efforts to prevent healthcare-associated infections using models of infection and hospital behavior, finding that for a given cost to policymakers, a dollar-for-dollar matching subsidy, preferentially awarded to hospitals with low intrinsic rates of infection transmission, yielded the greatest reduction in the proportion of infected patients.
