(Boston)—Justin Lui, MD, MS, FCCP, ATSF, assistant professor of medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, is one of seven physicians to receive the 2026 Network Rising Star Award for the Pulmonary Vascular and Cardiovascular Network from the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST). Established in 2024, the award recognizes an individual’s contributions in the areas of clinical care, education, research, and/or other scholarly activity, as well as someone who has shown growth and potential within each of the seven CHEST Networks.

Lui is a pulmonary and critical care physician at Boston Medical Center (BMC) where he attends the pulmonary hypertension consultation service and is a member of the pulmonary embolism response team, a multidisciplinary collaborative effort with cardiology, interventional radiology, and cardiac surgery in guiding clinical management of patients with acute pulmonary embolism.

As a clinician scientist specializing in pulmonary hypertension, nationally, Lui serves on the CHEST Pulmonary Vascular Section Steering Committee. Within the American Thoracic Society, he is currently a member of the Clinical Practice Guideline Committee on the Management of Pulmonary Hypertension and is the past chair of the Early Career Working Group for the Assembly on Pulmonary Circulation. Additionally, Lui is a member of the American Heart Association Early Career Committee of the Council on Cardiopulmonary, Critical Care, Perioperative and Resuscitation. He also serves on editorial boards for the journal, Chest and for the Journal of Intensive Care Medicine.

Lui’s research integrates subspecialties of pulmonary, cardiology, and rheumatology across fields of biochemistry, epidemiology and biostatistics to gain a deep cardiopulmonary phenotyping of patients with pulmonary hypertension related to an autoimmune disease known as systemic sclerosis. His research has been supported by both the National Institutes of Health, research foundations, and industry. In addition to his research work, which includes a track record of over 45 peer-reviewed journal publications and one book chapter, Lui is also a passionate educator. Within the department of medicine, he serves as the subspecialty education coordinator in pulmonary and critical care medicine and is a member of the intern selection committee for the internal medicine residency program.

In 2025, he was awarded the Top BMC Faculty Award – Excellence in Teaching, which is given to 10 faculty members who have had the greatest impact on trainees either at BMC or the Veteran Affairs Boston Health Care System.

CHEST is the global leader in advancing best patient outcomes through innovative chest medicine education, clinical research and team-based care.
