In 1998 CMAJ published a supplement of clinical practice guidelines for breast cancer produced by the Steering Committee for Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Care and Treatment of Breast Cancer. Since breast cancer is an extremely active field of research, this issue of CMAJ will launch a series, overseen by the same committee, containing guideline “updates” in the form of brief commentaries. These will outline revisions to previous recommendations and explain why the revisions are being made. The first new guideline is on management of lymphedema related to breast cancer treatment. This new guideline also includes an updated patient version for women battling lympedema related to breast cancer. The full text of all revised guidelines will be posted on the CMAJ Web site.
“The result of these efforts, we hope, will be a living clinical practice guideline, one that will never go out of date,” explains Dr. John Hoey, CMAJ’s editor. “We believe that keeping guidelines current will be valuable to readers, and we encourage other guidelines developers to follow the same format.”
