The American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society, has named Richard A. Sachleben, of North Billerica, Mass., a congressional fellow.
Sachleben will spend a year working on energy technology and infrastructure safety issues for the Energy Subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and its chairman, Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett (D-MD). Sachleben began his 12-month fellowship in September.
Sachleben received his B.S. in chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1970 and his Ph.D. in natural products synthesis from Rice University in 1984. He worked for 14 years in chemical recognition and separations at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He has also held positions at the Colorado School of Mines, the University of Colorado, and DuPont Pharmaceuticals Company.
The ACS Congressional Fellowship Program, now in its 26th year, provides chemists and chemical engineers the opportunity to work in the office of a U.S. senator, congressman or a congressional committee. They provide scientific and technical expertise to legislators and gain firsthand knowledge of the legislative and executive branches of the federal government.
