The European Long-Term Ecosystem, Critical Zone and Socio-Ecological Research Infrastructure (eLTER RI) has released its first policy brief, "Scaling Carbon Removal: Integrating Nature-Based and Technological Solutions for Climate Neutrality". The publication marks a milestone in eLTER’s mission to provide science-based advice that supports effective and sustainable environmental policymaking.
Climate change is among the most pressing challenges facing Europe and the world. The policy brief highlights that achieving climate neutrality requires not only rapid emission reductions but also large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Both nature-based and technological approaches are essential to stabilize global temperatures and meet the Paris Agreement goals.
Natural carbon sinks such as forests, soils, and peatlands are vital but increasingly under pressure and no longer sufficient alone. Complementary technologies like bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) must therefore be rapidly developed and deployed.
