Researchers analyzed the reliance on foreign imports by China and the United States for 42 nonfuel minerals used in emerging technologies and found that China and the United States largely depend on imports for 19 and 24 of the minerals, respectively; however, each country depends on imports for more than half of its consumption of 11 of the same minerals, potentially prompting international competition for existing supplies, according to the authors.
