Researchers report a review of 50-year global trends of nature's contributions to human societies, called ecosystem services, that shows increases in agricultural and material commodity production alongside declines in regulating contributions, such as seed dispersal and pest regulation; while adaptations and substitutes to offset these declines are possible, the authors write, they come at a cost.
