Researchers, students, and industry professionals working in microelectronics, microsystems, sensors, and related technologies will gather in Montréal on September 29, 2026, for the MDPI Subject Workshop: “ Microelectronics, Microsystems, Sensors, and Their Applications .”
The one-day workshop will take place at the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) in Montréal, organized by MDPI Canada in collaboration with the Regroupement Stratégique en Microsystèmes du Québec (ReSMiQ). The event will provide a forum to exchange knowledge, discuss emerging technologies, and explore new opportunities for collaboration across rapidly developing areas of engineering and applied science.
The workshop will be chaired by Prof. Ricardo Izquierdo, Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at ÉTS and Director of ReSMiQ. His research spans micro- and nanotechnologies, printed electronics, sensors, biomedical microsystems, advanced materials, and sustainable energy technologies.
The scientific program will explore a broad range of topics related to microelectronics, microsystems, sensors, and their applications. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to:
Confirmed speakers
The workshop will feature presentations from researchers working across several complementary areas of microelectronics, microsystems, and sensing technologies.
Prof. Frédéric Nabki, Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at ÉTS, will present “The Infinite Possibilities of the Infinitely Small: From MEMS Devices to Integrated Microsystems.” His research spans MEMS, analog/RF and mixed-signal integrated circuits, sensor interfaces, heterogeneous microsystem integration, and ultra-wideband transceivers.
Prof. Eihab Abdel-Rahman, Professor of System Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo, will present “Resonant Sensors Beyond Small Signals.” A nonlinear dynamicist by training, his research focuses on micro-, nano-, and quantum sensors and microactuators. In his presentation, he will discuss recent approaches developed by his research group to overcome the limitations of small-signal interrogation in resonant sensors, including sensing without a drive signal, sensing at a bifurcation, large-signal sensing, and sensing within mixed-regime flows.
Prof. Sharmistha Bhadra, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University, will present “Advancing Electronics and Reducing E-waste with Organic and Solution Processed Electronics.” Her research focuses on semiconductor devices, micro- and nanofabrication, flexible electronics, sensors, and sustainable electronic technologies.
Prof. Jhonattan Córdoba-Ramírez of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) will present “Multiresonant Plasmonic Metasurfaces for Biosensing: From Modeling and Nanofabrication to Point-of-Care Implementation.” His research focuses on applied and computational electromagnetism, optics, and photonics, with particular emphasis on nanophotonics and biosensors for advanced diagnostics.
Prof. P. Ravi Selvaganapathy of McMaster University will also participate as a confirmed speaker. His research focuses on microfluidics, biomedical microdevices, lab-on-a-chip technologies, and microsystems for biomedical applications, contributing to the workshop's broader focus on biomedical microsystems and sensing technologies.
Additional speakers will be announced as the scientific program is finalized.
Poster competition
The workshop will also feature a poster competition, offering students and early career researchers an opportunity to present their research and receive feedback from fellow researchers and experts in the field. The competition will provide a platform to showcase emerging work, while encouraging scientific exchange and networking among participants.
