USTC develops solvent- and hydrogen-free method to upcycle high-density polyethylene plastics

A USTC research team introduces a novel dehydroaromatisation and hydrogenolysis tandem strategy to convert HDPE plastics into cyclic hydrocarbons without solvents or hydrogen. The method guarantees the continuity and stability of the catalytic reaction, making it suitable for various polyethylene plastics.

USTC revealed compositional and thermal state of earth’s lower mantle

The study reveals that LLSVPs exhibit higher densities at the bottom of the lower mantle, while displaying lower densities above a depth of approximately 2700 kilometers. Elevated temperatures and enriched concentrations of iron and bridgmanite are also detected.

Unimolecular reactions of anti-glycolaldehyde oxide and its reactions with one and two water molecules

Researchers used coupled cluster theory and multi-structural canonical variational transition state theory to investigate the unimolecular reaction of anti-glycolaldehyde oxide and its bimolecular reactions with atmospheric water vapor. The study found that the OH substituent increases reactivity and a specific reaction path dominates ...

5-aminolevulinic acid might help fight mitochondrial disorders

Researchers at Tokyo Metropolitan University have discovered that 5-aminolevulinic acid can selectively boost Complex II and IV to counteract Complex I deficiency, a common cause of mitochondrial disorders. This finding offers new hope for the development of treatments for debilitating conditions such as MELAS syndrome.
