Skin longevity needs credibility: scientists to examine what can be measured, modified and claimed

10.04.26 | Mitochondria-Microbiota Task Force

Skin Longevity Needs Credibility

The field is growing rapidly across dermatology, cosmetics, biotechnology and regenerative medicine, but credibility will depend on understanding the mechanisms, validating biomarkers, testing interventions properly and ensuring that claims are supported by evidence.

Dr. Marvin Edeas, Chair of the Scientific Board and an expert in mitochondria and microbiota, stated:

“Skin Longevity needs credibility. Credibility requires mechanisms we understand, biomarkers we can trust, interventions we can test, and claims supported by evidence. Our aim is to move minds and move the field forward.”

How do cells, mitochondria, microorganisms and tissues communicate during ageing?

How can biological skin age be measured?

Can ageing be modified, and how should rejuvenation be demonstrated?

Jean Krutmann - exposome science and precision prevention
Daniel S. Roh - cellular senescence and rejuvenation
Mikołaj Ogrodnik - senescence, wound healing and regenerative decline
Haruki Horiguchi - immunity and inflammaging
Shigeru Yanagi - mitochondria–melanosome communication
Jingjing Xia - skin microbiome ecology
Shigefumi Okamoto - host–microorganism dialogue
John A. Rogers - next-generation skin-interfaced sensors
Aoife Morrin - skin volatolome and non-invasive biomarkers
Manuel Rodríguez-Paredes - epigenetic skin ageing
Hugo Agostinho Machado Fernandes - regeneration and cell-free therapies
Angel Menendez Vazquez - biological age and rejuvenation
Andrea Heinz - evidence behind ingredients, interventions and claims
Leah Wei - clinical translation of Skin Longevity

Biological activity alone is not sufficient. Formulation, stability, delivery/bioavailability, human evidence and the strength of the clinical endpoints all influence what can credibly be claimed.

Can We Really Claim “Skin Longevity”?

Andrea Heinz brings the scientific evidence perspective.

Leah Wei brings the clinical perspective.

What Evidence Do We Need Before We Can Claim “Skin Longevity”?

Academia × Industry × Clinical perspectives

mechanism → measurement → intervention → human evidence → credible claims.

Skin Longevity should develop as a credible scientific field rather than remain only an attractive marketing concept.

The important distinction is between:

mechanistic promise
measurable biological change
demonstrated human benefit
