$1.3M grant to examine working conditions for NC special education teachers

09.16.26 | University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

UNC-Chapel Hill researchers have received a $1.3 million federal grant to study working conditions for special education teachers across North Carolina and how those conditions may affect teacher retention and outcomes for students with disabilities.

The five-year study, led by researchers at the Education Policy Initiative at Carolina (EPID) and the FPG Child Development Institute, will examine data from nearly 2,500 public schools and 115 districts, along with interviews with more than 120 special education teachers and school leaders. Researchers will look at factors such as workload, administrative support and school- and district-level resources to identify conditions that can help schools retain special education teachers and better support students with disabilities.
