A Perspective presents evidence for high-probability, high-impact tipping points in ocean physics, chemistry, and biology, which may be fragmented in region and timescale but can cumulatively lead to global impacts; the evidence suggests that ocean tipping points, in combination with gradual climate change effects, should be treated as seriously as discrete catastrophic events to mitigate cumulative global impacts, according to the authors.
