Bacteria Pulled From Local Pond Water Show Early Promise for Cleaning Up Sewage

Study identifies green sulphur bacteria from Peshawar pond samples that reduced pollution markers in wastewater after a week of treatment

Wastewater management remains a global challenge, and researchers are increasingly exploring naturally occurring bacteria as a low‑cost, environmentally friendly solution. This new research, published in the Current Journal of Microbiology, reports on photosynthetic bacteria isolated from local pond water in Pakistan and tested for their ability to degrade pollutants in sewage.

Why Photosynthetic Bacteria?

Photosynthetic bacteria are already recognized for their potential in diverse applications, ranging from wastewater treatment to biofuel production. They are broadly classified into two groups: purple sulphur bacteria and green sulphur bacteria. This study aimed to isolate a photosynthetic bacterium from a local source and evaluate its effectiveness in treating wastewater collected from the surrounding area. If successful, such an approach could enable communities to use naturally occurring, locally sourced organisms rather than relying solely on resource‑intensive treatment methods.

From Pond Water to the Lab

Researchers collected pond water samples from two sites in the Peshawar district of Pakistan to search for photosynthetic bacteria. After isolating candidate strains, they identified two isolates, labeled 7w and 2w, with characteristics consistent with the Chlorobium genus, a group of green sulphur photosynthetic bacteria. These isolates were then tested directly on wastewater collected from a local sewage source to assess their pollutant‑degrading capacity.

Measuring the Cleanup Effect

To evaluate bacterial performance, the team monitored two standard water‑quality indicators: biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Both metrics reflect the level of organic pollution in water, with higher values indicating more oxygen‑depleting contaminants. A reduction in these values after treatment signals improved water quality. After seven days of incubation, the 2w isolate reduced BOD by 40.38% and COD by 48.91%. The 7w isolate also improved water quality, though less effectively, lowering BOD by 27.51% and COD by 19.71%.

What the Results Suggest

The performance gap between the two isolates highlights meaningful differences in bioremediation potential even within the same bacterial genus. The findings suggest that Chlorobium‑related bacteria could contribute to sewage treatment, offering a potentially more sustainable pathway to improving water quality.

A Preliminary Study, By Design

The authors emphasize that this work represents an early, preliminary step rather than a complete solution. Two limitations are particularly important: the bacterial isolates were not confirmed through molecular identification techniques, which would provide greater certainty about their genetic identity, and the study tested only a small number of isolates. Both limitations point to the need for further validation, including molecular confirmation and testing of additional strains, before these findings can be developed into a reliable, scalable bioremediation strategy.
