The importance of folic acid supplementation through prolonged lactation was established in a study of 42 women consuming adequate dietary folate. During 6 mo lactation, plasma and milk folate and hematocrit were sustained by supplementing with 1 mg folic acid per day, but declined in unsupplemented women.
