Using transmission electron microscopy, researchers analyzed more than 200 human hair fibers collected from women living in Baoding and Dalian in China, and found that increased hair fiber degradation was correlated with increased levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in the fibers, and exposure to ultraviolet radiation increased damage to fibers that had been contaminated with high PAH concentrations, suggesting that ultraviolet radiation combined with physiological PAH concentration damages human tissue.
