Using various dating techniques, researchers conducted genome-scale analysis on more than 4,000 genes from 82 mammalian species, and found that placental mammals likely experienced continuous diversification throughout the Cretaceous-Paleogene (KPg) extinction, a finding that is not only increasingly consistent with the fossil record but also suggests that the KPg mass extinction event had little effect on the diversification of placental mammals.
