The ASA is a scientific and educational society established to promote excellence in the application of statistics. Fellows are elected based on their contributions to the advancement of the field of statistics, their leadership within the field, publications, involvement in ASA activities and other professional activities and memberships. Each year, no more than one third of one percent of ASA's members are named fellows.

Holford, along with the rest of this year's elected fellows, will be recognized at a ceremony held during the ASA's 165th annual Joint Statistical Meeting, to be held from August 7–11 in Minneapolis.

Holford's research interests are in the development and application of statistical methods in public health and medicine. He focuses on analyzing temporal trends in disease maps, developing models that can be used to develop strategies for controlling cancer, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to study the association between environmental exposures and disease risk.
