Fear of human “super predator” pervades South African savanna

A recent study found that animals in the Greater Kruger National Park react with alarm to hearing human voices, fleeing waterholes and abandoning their habitat. The researchers used custom sound systems to compare the fear response of mammals to humans versus lions.

A research team has uncovered a fundamental brain circuit that distinguishes between direct and vicarious fear, with the locus coeruleus playing a crucial role in processing fear. The study reveals a lateralized LC-NAergic system that separates personal from socially learned fear, shedding light on empathy and social learning.

A new study found that nearly three out of four adults suffer from dental fear, with 45.8% experiencing moderate fear and 26.8% severe fear. Most individuals interested in overcoming their fear are open to free, brief treatment options, such as virtual dental fear treatments using apps and telehealth.

A study experimentally caused a predator die-off to understand its impact on freshwater ecosystems, finding that rapid predator deaths lead to an increase in zooplankton biomass and phytoplankton proliferation. However, this effect can sometimes introduce decaying biomass that causes harmful algal blooms.

A new Australian study proves kangaroos and wallabies fear humans more than dogs, devils or wolves, with a 2.4 times higher likelihood of fleeing in response to human voices.

Researchers discovered that a bacterial species can switch from being prey to a predator when grown at a lower temperature. The study, published in PLOS Biology, highlights the importance of considering historical context in evaluating predator-prey relationships.
