Three grid researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory were recently elevated to senior membership in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Shamim Hasan, Mohammad Khalid and Deepika Patel focus on energy infrastructure in their research within the lab’s Energy Science and Technology Directorate.

IEEE, which has more than 450,000 members, bestows senior member status on less than 10 percent of them. The highest professional grade to which members can apply, the distinction is awarded by peers to recognize significant technical achievements and professional contributions.

Hasan is a postdoctoral research associate in ORNL’s Grid Transients & Advanced Modeling Group. He focuses on electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling, which enables detailed understanding of how the split-second reactions of power electronics in the electric grid affect grid behavior and outages. His research interests include microgrids, control of grid-connected converters and power quality improvement.

Khalid and Patel both work in the Grid Systems Architecture Group. Patel is an R&D assistant staff member who works on power system protection, fault modeling, microgrid controls, distribution networks, relay testing with hardware in the loop, real time automation and control, and resilient energy system integration.

Khalid is postdoctoral research associate who develops test beds for power systems in ORNL’s Grid Research Innovation and Development Center, or GRID-C. His research spans power systems that interface with converter equipment, utility-scale microgrids, advanced controls, energy storage systems and more. He works to bridge fundamental research to laboratory-scale validation and utility-scale deployment of emerging grid technologies.

UT-Battelle manages ORNL for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. The Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, please visit energy.gov/science .
