OTTAWA, October 21, 2026 – Canadian Science Publishing (CSP), Canada's largest independent not-for-profit scholarly publisher, is proud to announce the launch Avancées francophones en sciences et en génie , a new collection of French-language scientific articles published across nine internationally recognized CSP journals: Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism; Biochemistry and Cell Biology; Botany; Canadian Journal of Chemistry; Canadian Journal of Forest Research; Canadian Journal of Plant Science; Canadian Journal of Zoology; Drone Systems and Applications ; and FACETS . The articles are made available on the Érudit platform, free of charge to both authors and readers. Funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) , this Diamond Open Access collection is designed to strengthen the creation, dissemination and mobilization of scientific knowledge in French.
“For nearly a century, Canadian Science Publishing has been committed to ensuring that scientific knowledge can be discovered, understood and used,” said Josephine Sciortino, Senior Director, Editorial, at Canadian Science Publishing. “ Avancées francophones en sciences et en génie is a natural extension of that mission. By publishing scientific knowledge in French, we are not only making research more accessible—we are also enriching the diversity of scientific perspectives and strengthening the connections between research and the communities it serves.”
The launch comes at a time of renewed national attention to the role of French in scientific communication. Recent work by the External Advisory Group on the Creation and Dissemination of Scientific Information in French, established under the Government of Canada’s Action Plan for Official Languages 2023–2028, together with evolving government priorities around linguistic equity, have underscored the importance of strengthening Canada’s capacity to create and share scientific knowledge in French. This collection is part of a broader effort to build that capacity for the long term.
An inaugural collection showcasing scientific excellence
Available on Érudit —a leading platform for scholarly publishing and knowledge dissemination in Canada and internationally—the inaugural collection features 14 articles previously published in eight of the nine participating journals. The articles explore topics of significant importance, including forestry, Indigenous knowledge and biodiversity. They are authored by leading researchers, including Yves Bergeron, Annie Claude Bélisle and Fanie Pelletier, demonstrating that scientific excellence thrives in French as well.
“For many years, international visibility has been a defining factor in the evaluation of research and academic careers in the natural sciences and engineering,” said Fanie Pelletier , Professor at the Université de Sherbrooke and Chair of the collection. “As researchers, we may have overlooked another important responsibility: ensuring that scientific knowledge reaches Francophone communities in the language they use. With Avancées francophones en sciences et en génie , we want to demonstrate that researchers do not have to choose between scientific excellence and publishing in French. On the contrary, the two reinforce one another.”
Future publications will be built through French-language calls for papers issued by each of the nine participating journals. Manuscripts will undergo the same rigorous peer-review process that has earned these journals their international reputation, with submissions assessed by French-speaking members of each journal’s editorial board. This approach enables researchers to benefit from the credibility, visibility and editorial excellence of well-established peer-reviewed journals while contributing to a scientific publishing ecosystem that is more accessible, more inclusive and more reflective of Canada’s linguistic diversity.
Advancing stronger science and a better-informed society
Beyond expanding access to scientific publications, the initiative is grounded in a growing recognition that stronger science is science that can be created, published and mobilized in multiple languages. Plurilingualism enriches research by broadening perspectives, fostering innovation and strengthening the connections between science and the communities it serves.
By supporting the publication and dissemination of research in French, the collection also makes scientific knowledge more accessible to those who rely on it: researchers, decision-makers, professionals, students and the communities affected by today’s most pressing challenges. In doing so, it helps ensure that research can better inform decisions, shape professional practice and contribute to addressing complex societal issues.
