The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) has published a report in the journal BioScience highlighting the winners of its 2025 Faces of Biology Photo Contest. The contest was cosponsored by AIBS and the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB).
In it, author Diane Bosnjak describes the role of the contest as highlighting "biological research through impactful, personal imagery, illustrating its diverse forms and settings. By showcasing these visuals, it aims to help the public and policymakers recognize the importance of biological research and education."
This year's first place winner was Heather Frantz, from North Carolina State University, who contributed a photograph of graduate student April Sharp reaching for a Spatterdock water lily ( Nuphar advena ) flower from a paddleboard on Yates Millpond. Photographs and details about the other winners can be found in the report. All of the winners receive a one-year subscription to BioScience, and Heather Frantz will also receive $250.
As described in the report, the 2026 AIBS Photo Contest is now open and accepting submissions. More details can be found on the AIBS website at https://www.aibs.org/faces-of-biology.
