According to a study including a cohort of six men and six women of reproductive age, estrogen receptor modulators enhanced the efficacy of HIV latency reversal agents, whereas β-estradiol inhibited latent virus activation, suggesting that exposure to estrogen may limit the emergence of HIV from latency and that the effect of estrogen on virus latency should be considered in future trials of HIV eradication therapies, consistent with molecular studies showing that estrogen receptor-1 is likely to be a key factor in maintaining a latent reservoir in infected people.
