In a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD), researchers used focused ultrasound to increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier and improve the delivery of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg)--a collection of antibodies known to ameliorate amyloid pathology--to the hippocampus; compared with controls, focused ultrasound increased the amount of antibodies delivered and resulted in four-fold improvement in hippocampal neurogenesis, a regenerative process impaired in AD, and the results suggest that focused ultrasound may help improve the efficacy of immunotherapy for AD.
