Jiang building dual-expertise workforce in quantum computing & health care through dual-state collaboration

09.29.26 | George Mason University

Weiwen Jiang, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), received funding for the project: “Collaborative Research: CyberTraining: Implementation: Medium: Building a Dual-Expertise Workforce in Quantum Computing and Healthcare Through Dual-State Collaboration.”

Jiang’s primary goal for this project is to establish a sustainable training framework for developing dual expertise in quantum computing and health care applications.

To accomplish this, Jiang and his collaborators are developing a domain-driven CyberTraining program organized around three integrated training thrusts.

First, they are creating modules that help participants connect health care problem formulation with quantum concepts and algorithms, including quantum-compatible data representations and applications in molecular modeling and diagnostic analysis.

Second, they are developing modules on quantum software productivity, portability, and reproducibility, including cross-platform program translation, auditable workflow construction, and uncertainty-aware evaluation of noise, drift, and hardware variability.

Third, the researchers are creating application-driven modules that guide participants in building complete quantum-classical workflows for health care use cases, including protein structure prediction, quantum-ready dataset design, and DNA and RNA therapeutics modeling.

Together, these efforts deliver a reusable and scalable training program that combines rigorous instruction, hands-on practice, open-source resources, simulated and real quantum hardware, and health care-relevant applications, positioning participants to contribute to the national quantum workforce and to the responsible use of quantum computing in biomedical research.

Jiang received $250,000 from the National Science Foundation for this project. Funding began in Aug. 2026 and will end in late July 2030. In total, this is a $1M project across four principal investigators.
