NEW Community debuts at Goldschmidt 2026: An open scholarly community connecting artificial intelligence, environmental science, and geochemical research

MONTRÉAL, Canada, July 2026 — During the 2026 international geochemistry conference, Goldschmidt 2026, NEW Community carried out international outreach and scholarly exchange with researchers working in geochemistry, environmental science, artificial intelligence, the carbon cycle, energy resources, and sustainable development. As an academic exchange platform developed within the open-access publishing ecosystem of NEW HORIZON PRESS LIMITED, NEW Community seeks to connect researchers across disciplines, career stages, countries, and regions, while supporting the dissemination of high-quality research, open science practices, thematic initiatives, publishing collaboration, and the professional development of early-career scholars.

Goldschmidt is widely recognized as one of the most influential international conferences in geochemistry. The 2026 programme covers a broad range of themes, from deep Earth processes and mineral–fluid interactions to the carbon cycle, climate change, environmental pollution, energy resources, data science, and applications of artificial intelligence. During the conference, NEW Community engaged with participants on these frontier areas and presented its potential role in facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and open scholarly communication.

Workshops and seminars on the opening day included several topics closely aligned with the interests of NEW Community, such as “Geochemical Pathways to Carbon Removal in Mining,” “Toward Science-ready, AI-ready Geochemical Data,” “Reliability of geochemical data: How do we know?,” and “Geochemical Modelling Workshop — Using PHREEQC for laboratory and industrial applications.” These sessions reflect the ongoing transition of geochemical research toward data standardization, model-driven inquiry, AI-assisted analysis, and applied carbon-removal pathways, all of which correspond closely with NEW Community’s focus on artificial intelligence, environmental science, and sustainability.

NEW Community also followed a number of sessions related to environmental and carbon science. For example, “Enhanced Rock Weathering: from Fundamentals to Applications” addressed enhanced rock weathering as an important negative-emissions pathway; “Interaction of Earth surface processes, tectonics and the Carbon Cycle: from natural dynamics to landscape scale carbon management” examined the coupling among surface processes, tectonics, and the carbon cycle; and “Carbon sink from mafic and ultramafic systems, and alkaline waste by-products” focused on the role of mafic–ultramafic systems and alkaline waste streams in carbon-sink formation. These themes provide useful reference points for future NEW Community initiatives on carbon removal, geological carbon cycling, mineral carbonation, and environmental management.

In the areas of biogeochemistry and environmental processes, the conference featured several themes that resonate with NEW Community’s academic scope, including “Microbial Drivers of Elemental Cycles: Integrating Geomicrobiology, Biogeochemistry, and Modeling to Decipher Ecosystem Function,” “Probing Mineral–Organic–Microbe Interactions that Drive Biomineralization, Preservation, and Biogeochemical Processes,” “Methane Metabolism over Space and Time: Microbial, Geochemical, and Planetary insights,” and “Biogeochemistry of Natural Organic Matter in Aquatic and Terrestrial Environments.” These topics indicate that microbial processes, mineral–organic matter interactions, methane metabolism, and ecosystem-function modelling are becoming important entry points for understanding Earth-surface systems and environmental change.

With respect to contaminant transport, transformation, and environmental health, the programme included sessions such as “Metal pollution in the past and present: historical perspectives and emerging threats,” “Redox Controls on Contaminant and Nutrient Cycling Across Scales,” “Contaminant Dynamics in Groundwater and Freshwater Systems,” “Inorganic Contaminants in Populated Environments,” “Geochemical dynamics of persistent organic pollutants and emerging pollutants,” and “Novel reactive materials for advanced remediation of surface water, groundwater, and soil.” These subjects are closely related to NEW Community’s interests in environmental risk, pollution control, advanced remediation materials, and data-driven environmental governance, and they also indicate substantial opportunities for future collaboration at the intersection of artificial intelligence and environmental science.

Goldschmidt 2026 also included a series of activities concerning scholarly publishing, research data, and the use of AI, such as “Editors’ Roundtable on Publication of Geochemical Data,” “Best Practices in Academic Publishing,” “Best practices and advice for using AI in research and writing,” and “Where to next for publishing geochemical data and analytical protocols.” These discussions addressed the publication of geochemical data, open data, peer review, AI-assisted research writing, analytical-protocol publication, and research integrity. They are closely aligned with NEW Community’s commitment to open-access publishing, scholarly exchange, and knowledge sharing.

Through booth presentations, printed materials, in-person discussions, conference interaction platforms, and activities associated with the Mentor & Mentee Lounge, NEW Community introduced its community profile and collaborative vision to international researchers. The community places emphasis not only on publication and research dissemination, but also on sustained connections among researchers, including support for early-career scholars, thematic collaboration, reviewer-network development, interdisciplinary team exchange, and open science practices.
