Health and medical experts at The Australian National University will be able to pursue a range of vital research projects thanks to new Commonwealth Funding totalling more than $13.5 million.

The Minister for Health Tony Abbott announced the National Health and Medical Research Council grants at the John Curtin School of Medical Research today.

"Australia's very best health and medical research ideas are identified in the NHMRC's competitive selection processes," Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb said. "The Australian National University's continuing success in the NHMRC funding rounds confirms its standing as one of the best universities internationally.

"ANU has performed extremely well in this funding round, with 25 grants to support new and ongoing research into important areas of national interest," Professor Chubb said. "These include research into cancer treatment, mental health policy, malaria, and epilepsy.

"By continuing our work in these pressing medical and health issues, we're contributing to the solutions that will benefit Australia and the world."
