A study in which researchers examined 517 forest plots across the Hawaiian archipelago found that older islands had more native and rare species diversity than younger islands; the results suggest that species diversity patterns are influenced by both ecological and historical evolutionary factors, and biological invasions dilute the impact of island age on biodiversity patterns, according to the authors.
