In collaboration with the University of Vienna, the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and Heidelberg University, researchers at the TUD Dresden University of Technology have developed an innovative tool that significantly simplifies lipid research. The new open-source platform, LipidLibrarian, enables the automated consolidation of fragmented data from international lipid databases, such as LIPID MAPS, SwissLipids, and ALEX123, into a single, user-friendly interface for the first time. This enables researchers to identify new diagnostic markers more quickly, and to develop personalized therapies and innovative medicines. A study published in the Journal of Lipid Research details the platform's functionality and potential.

Lipids, commonly referred to as fats, are essential molecules in our bodies. They influence everything from energy storage to brain health and play a central role in many diseases, including diabetes, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular conditions. Until now, finding and comparing relevant information on different lipids has been a time-consuming process, as the information is available across different databases, where lipids are named and structured in different ways.

LipidLibrarian solves this problem by harmonizing and transparently presenting the data. Researchers can search for lipids by name, scientific code, or molecular mass and receive clearly organized results that include all source references. The source code and all data are freely accessible, which strengthens international collaboration in lipid research and lays the foundation for further developments in this field.

The system is already in successful use at Dresden University Hospital to perform high-throughput lipid analyses. It integrates and displays information from various lipid sources, including molecular properties and functions. This accelerates research processes and increases reproducibility, particularly in clinical projects investigating lipid profiles as potential biomarkers.

“With LipidLibrarian, we have created a tool that many researchers have long been wishing for. By bringing fragmented data together on a single platform, it saves valuable time and makes it easier to see how different molecules interact in disease processes. This allows disease mechanisms to be identified more quickly and accurately, and enables the exploration and development of new, more precise therapeutic approaches", explains Dr. Josch Pauling, initiator and project leader of LipidLibrarian, as well as research group leader at the Institute of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine at the University Hospital Dresden and the TUD Faculty of Medicine.

"When analyzing lipids, researchers often switch back and forth between research databases. However, since lipids are named differently in various databases, it is not always possible to reliably find the same lipid. This makes analysis significantly more difficult and time-consuming. LipidLibrarian solves this issue by automatically collecting and displaying information from different databases", says Felix Niedermaier, lead developer of LipidLibrarian, first author of the study, and researcher at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Vienna.

“Today's data-driven research must be transparent, reproducible, and international. LipidLibrarian is a prime example of this. With this software, our researchers are contributing to an infrastructure that extends beyond a single project and lays the foundation for future innovations,” says Prof. Esther Troost, Dean of the TUD Faculty of Medicine.
