Lyocell, a type of eco-friendly regenerated cellulose fiber, is known for its high strength and desirable properties. However, its susceptibility to fibrillation, which leads to pilling and diminished color appearance after laundering, has limited its widespread application. Now, researchers from Qingdao University in China have developed a groundbreaking method to address this issue, offering a sustainable solution for enhancing the durability and multifunctional performance of lyocell fabric.

The study, published in the Journal of Bioresources and Bioproducts , details an innovative approach involving the treatment of lyocell fibers with a cationic modifier (CM) followed by the application of anionic polyacrylic acid emulsions (AEs). This method leverages electrostatic interactions to form a discontinuous film on the fiber surface, effectively reducing water penetration and enhancing lateral cohesion between microfibrils under wet conditions.

The results are impressive. The modified fabrics exhibit significantly improved anti-fibrillation performance, with fewer fibrils generated even after multiple washing cycles. Additionally, the treatment enhances air permeability by 46.4%, improves dyeing properties, and increases glossiness without compromising the fabric's mechanical properties or whiteness. The study also demonstrates that the treated fabric has excellent abrasion resistance and durability, maintaining its performance even after extensive washing and rubbing tests.

This research introduces a sustainable strategy for achieving multifunctional performance and green dyeability in cellulose textiles. By optimizing the treatment parameters, such as AE concentration, curing temperature, and curing time, the researchers were able to achieve remarkable improvements in the fabric's overall performance. This innovative method not only enhances the durability and functionality of lyocell fabric but also expands its potential applications in apparel, home textiles, and healthcare materials.
