These new awards were designed to inspire innovation and novel research in oral care and to offer opportunities for investigators to conduct research into the development of innovative and novel compounds, biomaterials, or devices with a direct impact on the qualify of life of the public. The awards are in the form of unrestricted research grants, and the winning teams will share $225,000. The 2006 winners are:

The award in the Biomaterials & Bioengineering category is presented to Atsushi Ohazama, Sonie Modino, Isabelle Miletich, and Paul Sharpe, for the paper, "Stem-cell-based Tissue Engineering of Murine Teeth" [J Dent Res 83(7): 518-522, July, 2004].
