Jerusalem, Sept. 5, 2010 – Two faculty members and one graduate student from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem are recipients this year of awards from the American Political Science Association – the first time that three people from the Hebrew University have been so honored by the APSA in a single year.

The American Political Science Association is the leading professional organization for the study of politics and has over 15,000 members in 80 countries, including Israel. It conducted its annual meeting last weekend in Washington, DC, at which the organization and its affiliated sections presented awards in a number of categories.

The Hebrew University representatives who were honored by the APSA sections this year are:

Prof. Orit Kedar of the Political Science Department, who won the William H. Riker Book Award for her 2009 book, "Voting for Policy Not Parties."

Dr. Moshe Shayo of the Economics Department, who won the Michael Wallerstein Award for his article in the American Political Science Review in 2009 on the relationship between people's nationalist and economic level identities and their positions on taxation and redistribution of income.

Amnon Cavari, who received the Founder's Award named in honor of Stephen Wayne for the Best Paper by a Graduate Student. Cavary is now a Ph.D. student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, but won for his work while doing his M.A. in the Political Science Department at the Hebrew University.

"Winning of three awards in one year from the American Political Science Association is an exceptional and unprecedented achievement for the political science community at the Hebrew University," commented Prof. Avner de-Shalit, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Hebrew University.
