Researchers inserted neurotrophin3 (NT3)-loaded chitosan, a biodegradable material, into the thoracic spinal cord of adult rhesus monkeys with spinal cord injury (SCI), and found that NT3-loaded chitosan promoted long-distance axonal regeneration, neural repair, and motor and sensory functional recovery, findings with potential implications for treating human SCI.
