Laboratory experiments, atmospheric observations, and model calculations suggest that the rate of atmospheric autoxidation of volatile plant compounds, and thus the level of associated particulate matter, decreases with reductions in anthropogenic nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions due to a corresponding reduction in oxidant abundance, consistent with observations in the United States between 1990 and 2010, according to a study.
