In a study that included 37 participants, on average 33 years of age, researchers used intracerebral electrodes to map brain activity in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC), a brain region involved in reading, in response to rapidly presented visual letters and words, and report brain activity in response to letters and word-forms in the left posterior and left anterior VOTC, respectively, findings that might shed light on the neural basis of reading in the human brain.
