In a study of 10 overweight or obese participants, average age 58 years, liver fat content and insulin resistance decreased markedly following a 6-day ketogenic diet, accompanied by changes in mitochondrial fluxes and redox state consistent with increased hydrolysis of tryglycerides in the liver and partitioning of the resulting fatty acids toward ketogenesis, suggesting possible mechanisms for the reversal of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by a short-term ketogenic diet.
