Articles from the Third Sackler Colloquium on the Science of Science Communication present the perspectives of natural scientists, social scientists, and journalists to develop ways to communicate science effectively to the public. One article describes interdisciplinary projects to design effective communications about climate change mitigation and impacts for the general public, including lessons on promoting interdisciplinary collaborations between natural and social scientists. Another article explores potential societal, technical, and ethical questions raised by automated vehicles, and the challenges of communicating such issues to the public. A third article examines how and why citizens are misinformed about science and identifies key areas of research on misinformation. A fourth article discusses gene drives and their applications, and the challenges of communicating about gene drives and similar scientific developments with social, ethical, and legal dimensions. The authors make recommendations for scientists and journalists to ensure responsible science communication.
