Lance Sherry, Associate Professor, Systems Engineering and Operations Research (SEOR), and Director, Air Transport Systems, (SEOR), is developing a tool that can rapidly examine and evaluate multiple Future Vertical Lift (Maritime Strike) aviation detachment configurations. The end goal of this project is to identify the Aviation Detachment manpower mix that optimizes capability (e.g., flight hours per day) subject to multiple inputs and/or constraints (e.g., caps on total number of personnel, platform performance, maintenance requirements, crew rest, etc.).

Sherry is conducting this work in support of the U.S. Navy's plan to replace its legacy ship-based MH-60R/S helicopters and MQ-8 Fire Scout unmanned helicopters in the mid 2030s. This new capability called Future Vertical Lift (Maritime Strike) will be a family of manned and unmanned platforms and may differ substantially from legacy platforms in terms of roles, mission, and capabilities such that carrying forward the legacy MH-60 based aviation detachment manpower construct may not be appropriate or optimal.

Sherry received $10,000 from the National Center for the Advancement of STEM Education(nCASE) for this U.S. Department of Defense funded project. Funding began in September 2021 and will end in late December 2021.
