Reston, VA (May 15, 2026)— New research has been published ahead-of-print by The Journal of Nuclear Medicine ( JNM ). JNM is published by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, an international scientific and medical organization dedicated to advancing nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, and theranostics—precision medicine that allows diagnosis and treatment to be tailored to individual patients in order to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Summaries of the newly published research articles are provided below.

Brain Tumor PET Scans May Reflect More Than Tumor Cells
A study of 31 patients with diffuse glioma found that proteins thought to drive amino acid PET tracer uptake were located mainly in blood vessel cells rather than tumor cells. Researchers also found no clear link between protein expression and PET scan activity, challenging assumptions about how glioma imaging signals arise.

Long-Term Study Explores Kidney Safety in 177 Lu-PSMA Prostate Cancer Treatment
Researchers identified five cases of a rare kidney disorder called thrombotic microangiopathy in prostate cancer patients treated with 177 Lu-PSMA-targeted therapy over a 10-year period. Patients developed worsening kidney function months after treatment, and findings suggest radiation exposure to kidney tissue may play a role in the injury.

Study Suggests Standard Thyroid Cancer Radioiodine Doses May Be Safe for Dialysis Patients
A study of 16 thyroid cancer patients on hemodialysis found radioactive iodine treatment was generally well tolerated and effective, with no major blood-related side effects observed. Researchers also identified dialysis approaches that removed most remaining radioactivity, offering practical guidance for managing this complex group of patients.

New PET Imaging Agent Shows Promise for Detecting Breast Cancer Spread
Researchers tested a new Trop2-targeted PET imaging tracer in breast cancer patients and found it accurately identified primary tumors, lymph node involvement, and bone metastases. The experimental scan also showed higher specificity than standard FDG PET/CT in some cases, potentially improving detection of metastatic disease.

Emerging FAPI PET Scan May Improve Breast Cancer Detection and Treatment Monitoring
A review of 13 studies found that FAPI PET imaging detected more breast cancer lesions than standard FDG PET scans, including spread to lymph nodes and distant organs. The technique also showed promising accuracy for evaluating how well tumors respond to chemotherapy and immunotherapy before surgery.
