On October 20–21, 2026, science communicators, researchers, and journalists, united by a shared commitment to bridging science and society, will gather at Nagoya University for the 8th annual Japan SciCom Forum (JSF).
At a time when artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming nearly every aspect of society, this year’s theme, “Communicating Science in the Age of AI: The University and the Media in Japan and Asia,” is both timely and significant. The forum will explore how universities and media organizations are adapting to rapid technological change and what these shifts mean for public engagement with science.
“JSF is a growing community of professionals passionate about science communication and Nagoya University is excited to host this year’s event,” said Euan McKay, co-organizer of this year’s forum and Designated Associate Professor at Nagoya University’s International Strategy Office. “The JSF annual meeting is when our whole community comes together, so I always look forward to this chance to catch up with friends from all over Japan, Asia and beyond and learn from everyone’s recent experiences.”
As Japan continues to produce world-class research, there is growing recognition of the need to communicate these achievements more effectively on the global stage. JSF offers a unique platform for discussion, collaboration, and learning among those working at the intersection of science and society.
Key themes at this year’s forum include the impact of AI on public trust in science and institutions, shifts in the media landscape, and new approaches to engagement between universities and the media. “AI is one topic that regularly comes up in discussions at JSF meetings, whether it is on the agenda or not, so we're very much looking forward to this year’s event,” said Ayumi Koso, co-organizer and Director of the National Institute of Genetics, Japan.
The Japan SciCom Forum is an annual conference that brings together a diverse community of science communication researchers, practitioners, and learners. Participation is open to all, including attendees from outside Japan. The conference will be conducted in English.
Abstract submissions for oral and poster presentations are now open, with a deadline of August 31, 2026.
