The CMCC Foundation – Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, as the coordinator of the EU-funded UPTAKE project, and Politecnico di Milano will host the 4th International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) on June 10–12, 2026 , in Milan, Italy.
The conference is the fourth in a series of international events that reflect the rapidly increasing importance of CDR in climate science and in meeting global climate targets. Previous editions were held at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, and, most recently, at the CO2RE – Greenhouse Gas Removal Hub in Oxford, UK.
Why CDR, Why now
As the world confronts the mounting challenge of limiting global warming, Carbon Dioxide Removal has moved from the margins of climate science to the centre of climate action. CDR strategies – from nature-based solutions to technological approaches – are now recognised as essential complements to deep emissions cuts in credible net-zero and net-negative emissions pathways. Understanding their potential, limitations, costs, and social implications has never been more urgent.
A multi-disciplinary platform for the global CDR community
The conference brings together scientists, engineers, economists, policymakers, and civil society experts to share the latest research and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration. Conference themes include:

Organizers
The event is organized by CMCC and Politecnico di Milano , in the framework of the CMCC strategic programme on Integrating Industrial & Planetary Carbon Cycle.
The CMCC Foundation is a leading international research institution dedicated to climate science, advancing climate modelling, forecasting, and policy recommendations in close collaboration with global partners.
The UPTAKE project , coordinated by CMCC and funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe programme (Grant Agreement No. 101081521), aims to develop resilient CDR strategies grounded in robust scientific evidence on the social, technological, economic, and environmental dimensions of CDR technologies.
