Based on experiments using mice, researchers report that mild exercise and antioxidants, such as astaxanthin, can aid memory and neurogenesis in the brain's hippocampus, and the effects of both exercise and astaxanthin are additive and mediated by expression of the hormone leptin in the hippocampus; leptin is up-regulated by both mild exercise and antioxidants, according to the study.
