Geoglossomycetes is a class within the phylum Ascomycota that accommodates a single order and a single family, comprising nine genera. Geoglossomycetes is traditionally referred to as “earth tongues”. The class is characterized by tongue-shaped to clavate, stipitate, black ascomata covered with or without black setae, a swollen ascigerous portion, a cylindric stipe, filiform, septate paraphyses, cylindrical-clavate, 4–8-spored asci, and filiform or falciform, multi-septate, dark brown to hyaline ascospores.

In collaboration with domestic and international colleagues, the research team from the Key Laboratory of Phytochemistry and Natural Medicines, Chinese Academy of Sciences, studied 34 samples from China. By obtaining the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions and the large subunit of the ribosomal RNA gene (LSU) of these samples and combining them with publicly available genomic data of some Geoglossomycetes species from databases, the team reconstructed the phylogenetic framework of Geoglossomycetes and clarified the phylogenetic relationships among genera. Additionally, through ecological comparisons, morphological studies, and phylogenetic analyses based on combined ITS and LSU sequences, we introduced ten new species of Geoglossomycetes and confirmed four known species. The study also summarized the sexual morph characteristics of the two largest genera, Geoglossum and Trichoglossum .
