BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA — 10 September 2026 — SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics , announced that University of Central Arkansas Professor and Department of Computer Science and Engineering Chair M. Emre Celebi has been named the new editor-in-chief of the Journal of Electronic Imaging (JEI). His term begins 1 January 2027.
Celebi received his PhD in computer science and engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, United States. Celebi brings an extensive background in artificial intelligence and image processing, with experience in a wide range of subfields, including color space transformations, compression, enhancement, quality assessment, segmentation, feature extraction, classification, clustering, and content-based retrieval. An SPIE Fellow, he previously served as an associate editor for both JEI and the Journal of Medical Imaging and guest edited special issues for JEI .
"The Journal of Electronic Imaging has a long, distinguished history spanning three and a half decades,” says Celebi. “I look forward to leading this journal and further enhancing its integrity, quality, scientific impact, and efficiency."

Co-published with the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T), JEI publishes papers that apply directly to or focus on electronic imaging technology. Research areas include AI algorithms, remote sensing, adaptive image processing, and quantum imaging, among others. The bi-monthly, peer-reviewed journal was established in 1992 and has published 5,096 papers to date.
