Highly efficient hydrogen storage and separation of hydrogen from blended methane-hydrogen mixtures in pipelines

09.10.26 | Research Foundation for the State University of New York

Background :

Hydrogen energy storage is emerging as a clean solution to substitute carbon energy and other renewable energy sources. It allows vast quantities of green energy to be stored for long periods without degradation, unlike batteries, which suffer from discharge. However, hydrogen storage is an obstacle because it requires low temperatures or high pressures, making storage and transportation expensive. A major complication in the development of a hydrogen economy is the lack of infrastructure for hydrogen storage and distribution. A potential solution to this hurdle involves using existing natural gas infrastructure. Hydrogen could be injected and mixed with natural gas at the point of production or transported through the pipeline. The hydrogen would then have to be separated from the hydrogen‑methane blend for application. However, the low‑cost separation of hydrogen from natural gas at the point of use is a key issue.

Technology Overview :

Researchers at Stony Brook University have proposed a method for extracting hydrogen from hydrogen‑methane blends that enables fast, convenient separation and long‑term storage of hydrogen without loss or degradation. The technology utilizes a low‑cost metal hydride material that can separate hydrogen from a methane blend. The process involves operation at low temperature (50‑70°C), low pressure (50‑1000 psig), and fast kinetics, enabling a system that requires less energy than traditional storage methods. Additionally, hydrogen is yielded in extremely high purity (>99%) after separation.

About the State University of New York

The State University of New York is the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States, and more than 95 percent of all New Yorkers live within 30 miles of any one of SUNY’s 64 colleges and universities. Across the system, SUNY has four academic health centers, five hospitals, four medical schools, two dental schools, a law school, the country’s oldest school of maritime, the state's only college of optometry, 12 Educational Opportunity Centers, over 30 ATTAIN digital literacy labs, and manages one US Department of Energy National Laboratory. In total, SUNY serves about 1.7 million students across its portfolio of credit- and non-credit-bearing courses and programs, continuing education, and community outreach programs. SUNY oversees nearly a quarter of academic research in New York. Research expenditures system-wide are nearly $1.5 billion in fiscal year 2025, including significant contributions from students and faculty. There are more than three million SUNY alumni worldwide, and annually one in three New Yorkers who earn a college degree is a SUNY alum.
