Nevada seismology researchers develop model that estimates impact of large earthquake in Los Angeles

Researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno developed a model that estimates the impact of a large earthquake in Los Angeles by studying an earthquake in Kern County. The study found that the hanging-wall side of thrust-fault earthquakes experiences more extreme motion and damage than the footwall side.

Scientists discover 'moving mountains'

Researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno recorded a cluster of nearly 1,600 small earthquakes beneath Lake Tahoe, causing the nearby Slide Mountain to rise by 8 millimeters. The earthquakes coincided with an unprecedented uplift of the mountain, which scientists believe was caused by magma movement about 20 miles deep.
