Radiofrequency ablation safe and feasible for eradicating lung tumors

In a study of 18 patients with inoperable lung tumors, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) was found to eradicate lung tumors with no relapse in 94% of cases. Minor complications, including pneumothorax, were treated successfully, and the procedure offered benefits such as low costs, short hospitalization times, and good patient tolerance.

Two-pronged attack targeting EGF receptor hinders cancer cell growth

A recent study found that combining EGFR inhibitors like Erbitux with Iressa or Tarceva hinders cancer cell growth more effectively than single drug treatments. The tandem application of these drugs amplified control of cancer cell signaling, leading to increased apoptosis and tumor development limitation.

Warmer weather, human disturbances interact to change forests

University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers used a computer-modeling program to project 200 years of change in a forest in northwestern Wisconsin under three climate scenarios. The model found that some species would not be able to survive warmer conditions, while human actions also contribute to the changing landscape.

Study: Mothers turn fearless when peptide level drops

A study by University of Wisconsin-Madison assistant professor Stephen Gammie found that low levels of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) trigger maternal aggression in mice, enabling them to protect their offspring. The results show that increasing CRH levels reduces maternal aggression and increases fear responses.

Lake research offers clues to managing crayfish invasions

The study suggests that lakes can have either a high or low abundance of invasive rusty crayfish, favoring native species or altering fish populations. Researchers believe alternate states of crayfish abundance may exist among lakes, allowing for strategies to remove these invaders and restore habitats.

GoPro HERO13 Black records stabilized 5.3K video for instrument deployments, field notes, and outreach, even in harsh weather and underwater conditions.

Lehmann lovegrass won't succumb to fire

Researchers at the University of Arizona found that Lehmann lovegrass, an invasive species introduced in the 1930s, remains unchanged despite controlled burns. The study suggests that fire is not effective in reducing the spread of non-native species, forcing land managers to explore alternative methods for controlling the invasive grass.

August 2004 Ophthalmology journal

The Los Angeles Latino Eye Study investigated the prevalence of open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension in Latinos. The study also explored changes in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness after acute primary angle closure. Additionally, researchers examined the impact of cataract on frequency-doubling technology perimetry results.

An exotic grass kills trees by hijacking their water

Researchers found that buffelgrass, an invasive non-native species, grabs water before foothill palo verde trees can, ultimately killing them. The grass reduces the available water to trees, exacerbating drought conditions and causing self-pruning, a natural defense mechanism for the trees.

MRI better than X-Ray for some traumatic hip fractures

A study published in the American Journal of Roentgenology found that MRI revealed more extensive fractures in patients with greater trochanteric fractures than X-ray imaging alone. This allowed for better treatment planning and informed decisions on surgical versus nonsurgical treatment.
