Stephen M. Robertson, Professor, History and Art History, is set to receive $45,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities for the project: "Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935." Via this study, Robertson will provide the first detailed analysis of the events of the disorder and will map where the incidents happened. He will also trace how the press and legal system dealt with the events. This approach directs attention to the complexity and heterogeneity of the form of racial disorder that characterized the second half of the twentieth century. Robertson will develop a digital publication structured as a multi-layered, hyperlinked argument that showcases that perspective by connecting different scales of analysis: broad narratives, aggregated patterns, and individual events.

Funding for this work will begin in September 2021 and will end in late May 2022.
